Satelline-2ASxE

Satel’s Proved PC Compatible UHF Radio Modem

SATELLINE-2ASxE is a half-duplex radio modem for transparent transfer of asynchronous data. Fully compatible with its predecessor, the SATELLINE 2ASx, it offers several new important features and functions. The SATELLINE-2ASxE complies with the European ETS 300 113 Specification. At the first time, all the channel spacings (12.5/20 or 25 kHz) commonly used are available. The number of selectable channels has been raised to 160, 100 or 80, respectively. The maximum data speed is 4800 bit/s at the 12.5 and 20 kHz channel spacings, and 9600 bit/s at the 25 kHz spacing. The range of the radio modem has increased, thanks to increased transmission power (1 Watt) and improved sensitivity.

The SATELLINE-2ASxE has three modes of operation: the Data transfer mode, the Programming mode and the Test mode. In the Programming mode, the parameters and functions of the radio modem are conveniently set from a computer via the RS-232 interface. The Test mode offers a possibility to test the radio connection through data packet transfer or carrier detection.

Local area data communications

The SATELLINE-2ASxE is an advanced and versatile half-duplex radio modem that offers a variety of applications in local area data communications. It features a maximum data speed of 4800 or 9600 bit/s, channel spacings 12.5, 20 or 25 kHz, depending on the model, ample selection of radio channels in the UHF frequency range, a synthesized transceiver and programmable settings. SATELLINE-2ASxE is an even more advanced successor of the widely famous SATELLINE 2ASx. The most significant additional advantages to the user include availability of a large number of radio channels, new application possibilities due to extended operation range, and compatibility with any computer terminal, even without handshaking. SATELLINE-2ASxE is fully compatible with the Model SATELLINE-2ASxm2 radio modem. It also encompasses an operating mode for the simulation of the SATELLINE-1AS. SATELLINE-2ASxE incorporates programmable software with a large number of functions and settings. The operating status of the radio modem is controlled through a table of parameters, which are conveniently set from a PC through an RS-232 interface. The radio modem operates usually in one of three operating modes: In the Data transfer mode it is used for either transmitting or receiving. The operations menu also includes a Repeater function. In this special transfer mode the SATELLINE-2ASxE receives a data packet, stores it in a buffer and transmits it immediately further. The selection of functions and setting of the parameters is performed with the radio modem in the Programming mode. In the Test mode, the condition of a radio connection can be tested by means of data packets or the carrier wave. SATELLINE-2ASxE is primarily used for various local area data communications applications in industrial and urban environments. Thanks to its small size it can be easily mounted and integrated into fixed as well as mobile terminals. The RS- 232 interface facilitates easy connection to the customers’ terminals and systems.

Satel possesses not only the world’s widest selection of UHF and VHF radio modems but also extensive and profound knowledge of their applications. Starting from the specification of your problem and the configuration of a wireless data communications solution, the Satel applications experts and your local distributor will help you all the way through the project. The installation and start-up of a SATELLINE-2ASxE based data communications system is easy and straightforward. Satel Oy is a Finnish electronics and telecommunications company that specializes in wireless data communications. It designs, manufactures and markets radio modems for data communications and alarm transfer systems. The main user groups include industrial companies, public organizations and private persons.Satel is a  leading supplier of radio modems in Europe. The Satel radio modems are type approved in most European countries and elsewhere.

Characteristics

The SATELLINE-2ASxE radio modem consists of a synthesized transceiver and a modem board, packed in a compact aluminium case. The working principle of SATELLINE-2ASxE resembles that of a communications cable, except that the data transfer takes place in the half duplex mode. The PC connection and programmability of the radio modem offer a number of useful features. The alteration and setting of operating parameters is performed from the PC with the radio modem in the Programming mode. The SATELLINE-2ASxE complies with the European Specification ETS 300 113. The frequency band in use is the center frequency ± 1 MHz, which means that the number of possible radio channels with channel spacing 12.5/20 or 25 kHz is 160/100 or 80, respectively. The radio modems included in a local area network can be given addresses, for the purpose of identification. Addresses, either the same or different, can be attached to both the transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) part of the radio modem. The SATELLINE-2ASxE is capable of two-wire operation, which means that it can be used together with terminals which do not support any kind of handshaking, provided that the radio channel is free and the length of the data packet does not exceed 1 kbyte. For maximum reliability, it is however recommended using the CTS handshaking where feasible. The radio modem is compatible with most of the commercially available telecommunications software systems used worldwide. SATELLINE-2ASxE can be operated at a voltage range 9...30 V. In practise this means that the radio modem is adaptable to both 12 Vdc and 24 Vdc systems. By means of two SATELLINE-2ASxE modems a connection between two points can be easily set up. As more stations are included, the modem lends itself particularly well for so called ”polling” or ”multi master” types of communication systems. The communication protocol required is to be provided by the controlling device. The output power of the transmitter is 1.0 watts, and the sensitivity of the receiver -115 dBm, which gives an operating range of 2 to 40 kilometers, depending on local conditions as well as the gain and installation height of the antennas.

Auxiliary functions

In case there is a need to extend the coverage of the radio modem network, the SATELLINE-2ASxE radio modem can be used as a repeater station. In the repeater function, it receives a data packet (max length 135 bytes) and transmits it immediately further. With the radio modem in the Test mode, the quality of a radio connection can be tested by means of data packets or the carrier wave. The Data transfer mode of the SATELLINE- 2ASxE includes a Command Program function in which the radio channel and addresses can be changed on-line from the serial port of the radio data modem. The changes are effected by means of a specific programming package (SL command), which is entered amidst ordinary data.
